The Swedish Goverment has awarded the state-owned gambling monopoly Svenska Spel a license to operate an intener poker service.
Deputy Prime Minister Bosse Ringholm justified the decision by saying that the government wanted to channel internet gambling to organizations under the control of the Swedish state.
However, Ringholm, who is also gaming minister, said that Svenska Spel would not be allowed to run internet casinos or betting exchanges.
Boss Media, a Swedish egaming software developer, has been selected to deliver a full-scale online poker gaming system for Svenska Spel.
In separate news, Virgin has announced the relaunch of the completely redesigned poker website Virgin Poker, now part of the Boss Media poker network.
The company plans to start aggressively marketing the site early in 2006 offering some brilliant tournament opportunities, while focusing on customer support and retention schemes.
