Is sports betting legal in Oregon?

Yes, sports betting is legal in Oregon, with the Oregon Lottery overseeing all commercial sports wagering in the state. The state initially offered legal sports betting via Sports Action in 1989 and sports betting began in earnest in 2019 after PASPA was overturned.

Since early 2022, DraftKings has had a monopoly on statewide mobile betting. Additionally, you must be at least 21 years of age to place a legal sports bet in Oregon.

Oregon’s History of Gambling Laws

Oregon differs from most of the country in that it operated a legal sports betting industry well before the ban on sports betting was lifted in 2018. Through the state lottery, Oregon installed a game called Sports Action way back in 1989, allowing players to choose from 4-to-14 NFL teams to win against the spread that week.

This was allowed even after Congress voted for PASPA in 1992, which effectively banned sports betting in most of the country. But Oregon got an exemption and was still offering Sports Action until 2007 when it ended after an agreement to allow Oregon to host games in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament if it would end sports gambling in the state.

After 2007, little was happening on this front in Oregon until 2018 when the Supreme Court overturned PASPA, allowing every state the right to choose to legalize a broader sports betting industry. In 2019, Oregon passed its laws to legalize sports betting for both retail locations at tribal casinos and online using an app called Scoreboard, which was regulated by the lottery.

Scoreboard was not very popular and the revenue from sports betting in Oregon was not impressive with the lottery app having a monopoly on the market.

That is why Oregon Gov. Kate Brown proposed a bill in January 2021 to expand sports betting in the state by lowering the legal gambling age from 21 to 18, allowing for online betting on college sports, changing the tax rates and allowing for a free market of companies to have online sportsbooks. But the bill never made it into a major legislative session for a vote.

By January 2022, DraftKings Sportsbook replaced Scoreboard as the go-to online sportsbook app in the state. It is still the only licensed online sportsbook for Oregon users as of 2023.

Our Rating Methodology

We will better detail our rating methodology for these mobile sports betting apps below, but our judgment of the best sports betting experience is built on the ability to have a wide range of sports betting markets, betting types, payment methods, bonuses for new and existing users and a good customer service team.

Making your online sports bets should also be a hassle-free experience on a quality mobile site with a strong user interface on a site that is secure and safe to use. In the next sections, we are looking into the methodology that leads to our grades for the best mobile betting apps.

Competitive Betting Odds

If you are going to do a fair share of your online wagering with one sportsbook, then they better offer competitive betting odds. Otherwise, you will shop around for the best prices at other sportsbooks, which is usually a good practice to do anyway.

But sportsbooks can achieve competitive odds by offering reduced juice lines (-105 or -108 instead of the standard -110), opinionated lines like at BetOnline or by offering odds boosts on select markets.

Many Betting Markets Available

Just like you would expect plenty of casino-style gambling options at an online casino, the mobile sports betting site needs to have a robust sports betting market with plenty of sports, leagues and betting types. That means popular sports, niche sports, professional leagues, college sports and international leagues.

That also means a wide variety of betting types, including parlays, prop bets, round robin, teaser, pleaser, same game parlays. It’s also important that there are plenty of in-game betting markets.

Wide Variety of Banking Methods

We expect a good online betting app to have a wide variety of deposit and withdrawal methods, including credit cards, debit cards, bank transfers, eWallets, crypto deposits and more. We also make note of the different processing times, limits and fees associated with the various banking methods.

Promotions & Bonus Offers

A good sportsbook will offer a generous sports welcome bonus with plenty of bonus funds as a first deposit match.

The best online betting sites will also have ongoing promos for loyal users, including risk-free bets, reload bonuses, parlay insurance bets, odds boosts, a refer-a-friend program and a reward program to accumulate points with the more you bet on the sportsbook. Those points can then be redeemed for things like bonus bets and poker tournament entries.

Live Betting is Available

Any great online sports betting app these days will have live betting available. This means more than just the spread, total and moneyline for popular markets as we are now seeing props and game events included in live betting markets. With so many bettors using their mobile devices to bet while watching live games, live betting is a huge market to take advantage of.

Mobile Betting Interface

Since people are using their mobile devices to frequently place bets, the mobile site better have great design and be easy to navigate between the various leagues and sections on the site and to place our parlays and bets in a timely fashion before the next game starts or before the next play happens if we are doing a live bet. That is why the site must run smoothly without lag during those high-traffic moments.

While offshore sites lack official mobile sports betting apps for your iOS and Android devices, you can count on them to feature quality mobile sites optimized for your mobile device.

Customer Service

Was there a stat correction after a game that you think changed your bet’s outcome? Did a player you bet on to play never get into the game as a healthy scratch? Do you need help with getting a bonus into your account?

There are many reasons for sports bettors to contact customer service, so we expect a good support team to provide 24/7 support with a variety of contact methods, including an email address, a phone number, the ability to send a message with attachments on the site and a live chat feature.

Security Features

If you want to win real money online at a sportsbook, you have to be willing to share personal info such as your name, email, address and phone number. You will even have to connect your credit card or bank accounts to use as payment methods with these sites.

That means a lot of personal data is being shared with these sites, so we have to trust that they will protect our data from the wrong hands. That is why we only choose trustworthy sites with a longstanding history of excellence in serving customers in this industry. We feel more confident that our data will be kept safe and encrypted while using these sites.

Popular Types of Bets in Oregon

Oregon sports betting offers a variety of options for bettors looking to place wagers on their favorite sports. Here, we break down the most common types of bets available in Oregon, providing a straightforward guide to understanding how each one works:

  • Moneyline Bets: This is the most straightforward type of bet. You pick the team or player you think will win. If they win, so do you. The odds attached to each team or player determine how much you can win.
  • Point Spread Bets: Point spread betting involves not just picking a winner but predicting how many points they will win by. A favorite must win by more than the spread, while an underdog can lose by less than the spread or win outright for the bet to pay out.
  • Totals (Over/Under): With totals betting, you’re betting on the combined score of both teams in a game. The sportsbook sets a number and you bet on whether the final score will be over or under that number.
  • Parlays: A parlay combines multiple bets into one. To win a parlay, all your picks must win. The more bets you include, the higher the payout, but the risk also increases.
  • Proposition Bets (Props): Props are bets on specific events within a game, such as which player will score first or how many touchdowns will be scored. These bets aren’t tied directly to the outcome of the game.
  • Futures: Futures bets involve predicting long-term outcomes, like which team will win the championship or who will be named MVP. These bets are usually placed before the season starts and can offer large payouts.
  • Live Betting: Live betting allows you to place bets on games already in progress. Odds update in real-time based on the action, providing a dynamic betting experience.

Each type of bet offers a unique way to engage with sports betting, whether you’re looking for straightforward wins with moneyline bets or the thrill of live betting. Understanding these options can help you make more informed decisions and enjoy your betting experience in Oregon.

How to Read Sportsbook Odds

Understanding how to read sportsbook odds is a fundamental skill if you are looking to start mobile betting in Oregon. The default format used by Oregon sportsbooks is American Odds. This format makes it easy to spot favorites and underdogs and understand potential payouts. Here’s a breakdown of how to interpret these odds.

  • Betting on Favorites: When you see a team with a minus sign, like -110, it means they are the favorites to win. The number indicates how much you need to bet to win $100. So, if the odds are -110, you need to bet $110 to potentially win $100.
  • Betting on Underdogs: Conversely, a plus sign indicates an underdog. For example, odds of +120 mean that if you bet $100 and the underdog wins, you’ll receive $120 in winnings. Betting on underdogs is riskier, but it can lead to a larger payout.
  • Practical Example: Let’s say the Portland Trail Blazers are playing the Denver Nuggets and the odds are listed as Portland Trail Blazers (-110) and Denver Nuggets (+120). This means the Blazers are favored. If you bet $110 on the Blazers and they win, you’ll get $100 in winnings. However, if you take a chance on the underdog Nuggets with a $100 bet and they win, you’ll get $120 in winnings.
  • Using an Odds Converter: While American Odds are standard in Oregon, some bettors might prefer decimal or fractional odds. For those who wish to switch formats, an odds converter can be a useful tool. It allows you to easily convert between American, decimal and fractional odds, helping you understand and compare odds in your preferred format.

Grasping how to read and interpret sportsbook odds is crucial for making informed betting decisions. Understanding American Odds will enhance your betting strategy and help you navigate the sports betting market in Oregon.

Common Banking Methods for Mobile App Betting

For bettors in Oregon, understanding the available banking methods is crucial for a smooth sports betting experience. The right payment options ensure easy deposits and swift withdrawal options. Here’s a rundown of the common banking methods, focusing on convenience, security and efficiency:

  • Credit Cards & Debit Cards: Credit cards and debit cards remain a popular choice for bettors in Oregon. They offer quick and straightforward transactions. However, it’s essential to check with your card provider regarding their policies on gambling-related transactions.
  • E-Wallets: E-wallets like PayPal, Skrill and Neteller provide a secure way to both deposit and withdraw funds. They are known for fast transactions and offer an extra layer of security since you don’t have to share your bank details directly with the betting sites.
  • Bank Transfers: Direct bank transfers are a reliable option for moving larger amounts of money. While these might not be as quick as other methods, they are trusted for their security. Ensure you’re aware of the minimum deposits and any potential fees associated with bank transfers.
  • Prepaid Cards: Prepaid cards are a great way to manage your betting budget. They allow you to load a specific amount of money and easily control your spending. However, not all prepaid cards support withdrawals, so you may need an alternative method to access your winnings.
  • Cryptocurrencies: With the rise of digital currencies, many betting apps in Oregon now accept cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. They offer anonymity and very low transaction fees. Be mindful of the volatile nature of cryptocurrencies and ensure the betting site supports crypto withdrawals.

Choosing the right banking method can impact your betting experience. Consider factors like transaction speed, fees, minimum deposits and the convenience of withdrawal options before making your choice.

Popular Sports Teams in Oregon

There are several popular sports teams based in Oregon, including one in the four major professional sports leagues. Some of your favorite teams in Oregon are likely to be the big college teams, the Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers:

  • Portland Trail Blazers: Of all the professional teams in the NBA, the Portland Trail Blazers are a rarity in that they have never changed their name or switched cities since their inaugural season in 1970-71. The Trail Blazers won the 1977 NBA Finals and have not been back since losing to Michael Jordan’s Bulls in the 1992 NBA Finals. But they are led today by Damian Lillard, who is an outstanding shooter that is quite exciting to watch.
  • Portland Timbers: The Portland Timbers is a professional team in Major League Soccer (MLS). The Timbers had their first season in 2011 and their most successful campaign was in 2015 when they won the championship and the MLS Cup.
  • Oregon Ducks: The Oregon Ducks have been one of the winningest football teams in college sports with a history dating back to 1894 when they were known as the Oregon Webfoots. Now known for some stellar jersey designs, the Ducks have been a winning team in the Pac-12 Conference since the 2010s.
  • Oregon State Beavers: The Oregon State Beavers are of course a main rival to the Oregon Ducks as the schools are not far apart. They have played each other 125 times, making it the seventh-oldest rivalry in all of college football. Rivalries like this are why people love wagering on college sports and remember, you can do that in Oregon if you use an offshore sportsbook.

In addition to these popular professional sports teams, Oregon is home to a wide range of college teams that draw significant attention as well.

How to Create a Mobile Sportsbook Account

If you want to win money online with online betting, you will have to create and fund your account with real money. Below we will walk you through the four simple steps to do that at mobile sportsbooks.

  • Signing-Up: Visit the site of the sportsbook you want to join and begin the account creation process like you no doubt have done many times in your life at a variety of sites. You will want to have a password to use that is unique and not used elsewhere.
  • Verifying Your Account: Your account must be verified before it can be used. Enter your personal details, including your name, address, email and phone number. The sportsbook may send you a link through email or a code through text to enter and verify your account for the system. This will all happen very quickly but be sure to enter accurate contact information for yourself.
  • Depositing Your Funds: Now your account needs to be funded with real money. Before doing this, read over the terms and conditions of the welcome bonus, because that bonus amount will likely hinge on the size of your initial deposit. Once you know what to deposit, head over to the deposit or cashier section and make that deposit using your preferred deposit method.

After finishing these short steps, you will have created, verified and funded your sports betting account. Now you can start betting on your favorite picks, building parlays and much more at your preferred online sportsbook or mobile sports betting app.
