According to a survey by online bookmaker Victor Chandler, a third of more than 600 students interviewed, play online poker to try to pay off their debts or to supplement their student grants.

The research showed that most simply play for half an hour at a time in the hope of winning a tenner and just seven per cent play for more than five hours at a time.

A fifth of those surveyed turned out to be female players.
