Andre Wilsenach, Chief Executive of the Alderney Gambling Control Commission, told BBC News that while the US legislation which makes illegal for banks and credit card companies to process gambling payments would have little effect on the island, it would be a different story if other countries decided on similar legislation.
“Although it\’s very hard to say what effect it will have on the rest of the world, it is highly likely to encourage other jurisdictions and other governments to follow suit,” said Wilsenach.
Earlier last week, the Isle of Man reported a 30% increase in applications for egaming licenses. Bill Mummery, Head of E-Gaming Development with the Isle of Man Government, reiterated his view that any clampdown by the US Government could be beneficial for the industry, forcing it to develop other markets outside the US.
Elsewhere, the Gibraltar Government seem to have a different view. Panorama reported that the Gibraltar Government could lose millions of pounds in tax if there were substantial cuts in staff as the 15 online gaming companies residing on the Rock are streamlined to meet the new situation in the wake of the US decision.
