“Let’s be clear: if England win the World Cup, it will be the worst result in our history in terms of payouts,” said Simon Clare spokesman for Coral Eurobet.

“For us, the best thing would be for England to get to the final and lose on penalties,” said Graham Sharpe spokesman for William Hill.

“Our biggest liability is definitely England,” said Nick Weinberg, spokesman for Ladbrokes. “Yet while England winning the World Cup would be far from the best result for the industry, deep down we are as patriotic as everyone else. And if we are going to get stung for £15m, it might as well be England winning the World Cup.”
