Several UK-based online betting sites, including UKbetting, Totalbet and BetDirect, have been hit by outages which interrupted betting for periods of between 45 minutes and two hours during the same general time period.
It remains unclear what caused the betting sites offline, but historically the online betting industry has been one of the preferred targets of extortionists hackers, who use Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks to bring down those sites that refuse to pay a ransom.
