While the state started operating the lottery authorized by a bill signed into law by Gov. Mike Easley on August 31, a local newspaper discovered parts of the new law were drafted by Scientific Games, one of the nation\’s largest lottery companies.
The News & Observer requested the release of hundreds of e-mail messages, memorandums and other documents from the House Speaker\’s office, proving that the lottery legislation adopted for the state\’s policy on choosing companies to run the gambling operation, the language suggested by Alan Middleton, Scientific Games Vice President.
