As reported by Bloomberg News, Antigua\’s effort to overturn the US ban on internet gambling through the World Trade Organization is the last chance for the online gambling industry.
Mark Mendel, Antigua\’s lead counsel, told Bloomberg the US have done absolutely nothing to comply with last year\’s WTO ruling.
“In fact, they\’ve gone the other way. It\’s just bald-faced protectionism. Somebody had to take the fight, and this is really all there is left. If we lose this case then the U.S. is free to do what it wants,” he said.
A new WTO ruling is expected within February 2006. Unless the US win the case, Antigua, which cannot afford to impose sanctions in the form of higher customs duties, will withdraw intellectual property protection for US trademarks or copyright, Mendel said.
