The Grand National’s audience peaked at 9.5 million, while the earlier marriage of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles averaged 6.2 million.

Hedgehunter\’s victory was a great result for punters.

“The winner is a sparkling result for punters,” said David Hood, Director Of Public Relations at William Hill.

“It wasn\’t the worst possible result for bookies – Clan Royal or Forest Gunner would have cost us even more – but it was pretty close to it,” added Coral spokesman Simon Clare.

British bookmakers turned over £250 million on the race.

“All in all, it was the biggest individual betting day in history, bar none,” said Hood.
