Hong Kong Gambling Watch said it should be given more powers to check the spread of gambling across the territory.
Since football betting was legalized in 2003, the Hong Kong Jockey Club has offered bets on an increasing number of football leagues across the world.
“Such a variety has helped popularize football betting,” said Gambling Watch Chairman Wu Chi-wai.
Gambling Watch is responsible for advising the Secretary for Home Affairs on football betting and lottery regulations and may revoke or change the nature of licenses.
“But it cannot put a decision into practice,” said Wu.
“We hope that after being upgraded, the commission will have the power to regulate and keep a check on HKJC and other legal organizations that conduct gambling.”
