The former Non-Executive Chairman of Sportingbet was set free today after New York Governor George Pataki refused to sign the extradition order to Louisiana where Dicks is wanted on charges relating to “gambling by computer”.
Dicks\’s lawyer Barry Slotnick said Governor Pataki decided that extradition was not appropriate after reviewing all the papers and hearing all the arguments.
Pataki\’s spokeswoman Jessica Scaperotti said the Governor supports the effort to restrict illegal internet gambling but he did not have the legal authority to extradite Dicks as the New York State law permits extradition only if the accused person was physically present in the place where he is accused of breaking the law.
“Dicks hasn\’t been in Louisiana in decades and the charges there revolved around his activities in the United Kingdom,” said Scaperotti.
Despite Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco, not later than yesterday, renewed the extradition request for Peter Dicks as part of efforts to enforce the state\’s law against online gambling, Dicks\’s lawyer Barry Slotnick said his client will now try to persuade Louisiana\’s authorities to drop charges and put the entire matter to rest.
Emery Ledger, attorney at law, anticipates a settlement. “Louisiana is an infamous state for deal-making,” he said.
