No more bets on El Tel

Bookmakers have suspended betting on who will be the next Republic of Ireland manager after a string of large bets on Terry Venables.

The former England and Barcelona coach has seen his odds plummet from 13/2 to 1/4 with Paddy Power while Ladbrokes have stopped accepting any bets.

“We cut El Tel\’s odds from 13/2 to 4/1 in an attempt to stem the tide. There were no odds short enough to put the punters off, even the 1/2 was snapped up and now he\’s 1/4! There\’s no official announcement yet but this plunge looks like the real deal.” said a spokesman for the Paddy Power.

Venables, which has also managed Leeds, Middlesbrough and Tottenham, denied that he had been approached about the job or applied for it.

In separate news, Ladbrokes has reported a flurry of bets and has cut the odds on a white Christmas in London and Leeds from 8/1 to 5/1. The bookmaker responded to interest stirred up by forecasts of an exceptionally cold winter and is now offering odds of 25/1 on temperatures plummeting below the British Christmas Day record of -18.3C, measured in Gainford in County Durham on December 25, 1878.
