For the first time, betting shop punters will be able to take advantage of one of the most sought-after aspects of the betting exchanges and will be allowed to bet after the off of a race and right up to two fences from home.
“This is an enormous step forward for our customers. Never before have bookies been able to give shop punters the chance to bet in-running,” David Williams, spokesman for Ladbrokes, told the Racing Post.
“Not only will punters be given a second chance to back their fancy if they miss the start of the race but they\’ll also be able to bet up to £1000 as the race unfolds.”
Punters will fill in specially designed slips and although Ladbrokes is aware that some punters may attempt to steal backprices, the firm is willing to try out in-running betting to offer shop punters more choice.
Ladbrokes said trials of the service have gone extremely well with prices updated in real time by the firm’s trading team and inputted directly into the EPOS system and displayed on shop screens.
“A few people may try it on but that is not a major concern. People are always saying you can’t do it, but we are willing to give it a try and if the service proves a success, we could be looking at the biggest breakthrough in shop betting in years,” said Williams.
