UK culture secretary Tessa Jowell warned that the real danger created by the new prohibition in the US is that badly regulated offshore internet sites will become the modern day equivalent of speakeasies, increasing the risk of exploitation and fraud in the gambling industry.

Jowell was speaking ahead of next weeks\’ international summit on remote gambling, where politicians from 31 countries will discuss ways to regulate the online gambling sector.

As reported by eGaming Review, Ladbrokes said legislation in the US is aimed at protecting vested interests rather than consumers. The UK bookmaker also said prohibition will not work and that the UK Government\’s approach to regulate the egaming industry is the only way forward to protect consumers.

“The attempt to prohibit online gambling in the United States is doomed to failure. Over 20 million people play online poker in the United States and they will continue to play while there are sites willing to accept them. Unfortunately many of these sites will not adhere to standards of social responsibility or player protection,” said Ladbrokes.
