Jay Cohen, founder of the Antigua-based internet sportsbook World Sports Exchange, was convicted in February 2000 of conspiracy to violate the Federal Wire Act because WSEX accepted bets from US citizens. While behind bars in Nevada, Cohen received a letter which suggested that the crackdown on online betting left the US Government vulnerable to a trade complaint.
Cohen, who couldn\’t stop thinking about getting even with the government that had put him away, alerted Antigua and when the local online gambling industry finally agreed to foot the bill of a trade case that promised to be very expensive, he convinced the small Caribbean island to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization against the US.
“It kind of helped keep my spirits up,” Cohen told the Washington Post.
