UK Sports Minister Richard Caborn said Britain is sympathetic to Antigua\’s complaint to the World Trade Organisation which is accusing the US online gambling ban to be in direct contravention to last year\’s WTO ruling.

While he stopped short of saying whether Britain would support the complaint, Mr Caborn, who was speaking at the remote gambling summit in Ascot, said that a follow-up decision in the Antigua case, gauging compliance with the initial ruling, would be a “landmark decision.”

Mark Mendel, who is Antigua\’s legal advisor in the WTO case, said the remote gambling summit was a good start and that he hopes that a closer relationship with Britain will develop stronger support for the ongoing dispute with the United States.

“I am encouraged to see this many countries come together to discuss rationally the issues related to online gaming. While at a very early stage, this international effort should be commended,” said Mendel.

“Following our discussions today we look forward to working with Tessa Jowell and the UK Government in continuing to implement regulations for the benefit of the online gambling community both in Antigua and the rest of the world,” commented Dr Errol Cort, Antigua\’s Minister for Finance and the Economy.
