The former William Hill Chairman, which is understood to have met Betdaq owner Dermot Desmond on more than one occasion, was one of the most convinced opponent of the betting exchange model and even accused the UK Government of ‘dereliction of duty’ for not closing Betfair down, when the exchange first appeared.

Although Brown’s appointment would demonstrate that betting exchanges have been accepted by the traditional bookmaking industry as just another product, it is possible that the meetings between Brown and Desmond were focusing on matters other than Betdaq.

Celtic\’s principal shareholder owns various interests in the betting industry, including a stake in Chronicle Bookmakers.
