Intralot moves down under

The Greek-based company addressed rumors that it will offer SMS betting in Australia after anti-gambling activists raised concerns that text message betting appeals to an audience of adolescents and youth. Acting prime minister Peter Costello said the government had already moved to close or restrict some internet gambling and would look at mobile phone betting.

Intralot, which has applied for a lottery license in the state of Victoria, said claims its mission is to offer betting via text message are \’mischievous rumours\’.

The company\’s director and former Victorian Treasurer Tony Sheehan said text message betting represent only a minor part of Intralot\’s focus.

Victorian Gaming Minister John Pandazopolous added that under the lottery license review currently under way, distribution methods that create continuous forms of play would not be approved.
