Despite Italy\’s World Cup win proved the worst possible result for the international betting arm of Stanley Leisure, Chief Executive Bob Wiper said the international division headed by John Whittaker has reported good results for the financial year with turnover up 27 per cent to £32.0m and operating profit up 90 per cent at £5.5m.
These strong results reflect favourable sporting results and a more stable operating environment. The agency network in Italy has grown and the firm, which has made good progress on establishing and developing agents in other countries such as Belgium and Germany, is now looking to replicate the agency model in a number of other European countries.
Stanley International is the last remaining sports betting operation held by Liverpool-based Stanley Leisure after the June 2005 sale of Stanleybet to William Hill for £504 million and the closing of the phone and internet sports betting service following the sale.
