The payment of fines and back taxes were imposed in 2002 on the owners of Curacao-based Gold Medal Sports, but were collected only yesterday at the end of a three-year effort.
In 2002, Duane Pede and Jeff D\’Ambrosia, who also ran a publishing house in Wisconsin advertising the betting service in the US, were sentenced for filing false income tax returns and violating federal laws against offshore bookmaking and wire wagering, and ordered to pay a total of more than $5.1 million in fines and back taxes.
At the same time Gold Medal was convicted of racketeering. While a year later David Tedder, Gold Medal\’s lawyer, was sentenced for money laundering and violating the wire wagering law, and ordered to pay a further $3.7 million in fines and illegal gambling proceeds.
