The Copenhagen Post reports that the days of Danish gambling monopoly Danske Spil are numbered.

A European Union lawsuit against Denmark has encouraged the Danish Government to investigate ways of meeting EU regulations and opening its gambling markets to competition.

Later this week the New Alliance’s Anders Samuelsen will table a proposal to end Danske Spil’s monopoly and pre-empt inevitable EU rulings to the same tune. “Either the commission will come and take it away, or the monopoly will over time lose its footing as more players seek markets abroad,” Samuelsen told The Copenhagen Post. “By selling licences to international gaming companies, a new source of income will be established.”

Karin Riis-Jørgensen, liberal party member at the EU parliament, recommended the Danish government to learn from the experiences of other countries in a bid to find the best way of meeting EU regulations.
