According to Dutch newspapers, the authorities started investigating a number of mid-level clubs after discovering that some players owned expensive houses and cars that seemed out of proportion with their salary levels.
Prosecutors in The Hague said that they are conducting a preliminary investigation into fraud allegations in the Dutch leagues, including bribery, match-fixing and embezzlement.
“We will investigate everything inside and out and leave no stone unturned and, if there is something illegal, we will make sure the culprits are punished,” said Henk Kesler of the Royal Netherlands Football Association.
This is the latest of a series of betting scandals that have hit some of Europe\’s top leagues, including Belgium, Finland, Germany, Italy, Poland and Portugal, in the last couple of years.
Elsewhere, the Italian GAT, the specialized corps in computer science of Guardia di Finanza (the Italian police force for financial investigations), have seized 365 websites that were advertising online casino gambling. In a separate operation, five individuals were arrested in Messina as part of an investigation by the Mobile squad on some bet collection centres. The arrests in the operation named “On Line” allegedly collected the bets, without however registering them at the English bookmakers were they were supposed to.
