Under the proposal, the Australian Football League, Cricket Australia, the National Rugby League, the Australian Rugby Union and the Professional Golfers’ Association would be allowed to demand fees to Victorian-based bookmakers as well as to ban certain types of bets such as spread betting.

While the sporting codes said the revenue and the control on betting are important to ensure the integrity of the sports in a betting environment, Victorian-based bookmakers might leave Victoria if the legislation is passed.

“If they go to Victorian bookmakers and ask for revenue out of turnover generated on sporting events, all it will do is force those bookmakers to operate outside of Victoria,” said bookmaker Simon Beasley.
