Speaking to Gambling911.com, Mark Mendel, lead counsel for Antigua in the WTO dispute against the United States, said he would like to sit at a table and seek a fair, negotiated solution. “We think that we can show these [betting] services can be provided safely and fairly from Antigua to U.S. consumers,” he said.
“It is frustrating, as we have given the Americans endless opportunities to work out a negotiated solution. For whatever reason, they have chosen not to do so yet. But, we expect that ultimately they will have to,” he added.
Mendel also said he believed that American media lacked understanding about the case, but that the US will ultimately comply with the WTO ruling and grant Antiguan operators market access.
Commenting on the recent BetonSports indictment, the European born lawyer said the US laws are protectionist and discriminating against foreign betting operators.
Elsewhere, 98% of the experts who participated at the MECN\’s survey on the future of the online gambling industry, believe that the recent shockwaves will have a medium-term impact on the industry.
The majority of the industry insiders surveyed said that the arrest of the CEO of BetonSports will end in problems for the entire online gambling industry.
Only 35% of the insiders think that the stock market overreacted. But 77% of the experts said that the most likely immediate effect will be that planned online gambling IPOs will be cancelled or postponed.
