As reported by the Racing Post, betting shop customers across Britain and Ireland thought Christmas had come early when the outcome of the 7.13 at Steeple Downs on Monday evening appeared on screens giving the result of the virtual race before it had been run.
Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison admitted the race attracted much more betting than would have been expected in normal circumstances.
“What happened was an SIS operator incorrectly put up the result of the 6.58 from Sprint Valley, won by horse 4 from horses 5 and 2, as the result of the 7.13 at Steeple Downs which had not yet been run,” said Hutchison.
“Obviously punters thought they were on to a good thing and a lot of them backed the 4 horse, which by sheer chance, despite being a different virtual horse at a different virtual track, won, but this time the placed horses were 7 and 3, knocking out the forecast and tricast bets.”
“I would be lying if I said it hadnt cost us money. We are in conversation with SIS as to what went wrong, and what we can do about it,” he added.
