We’re in a lockout in the MLB. It probably could’ve been avoided but the owners don’t want to bargain in good faith. So here we are. For sports bettors, it hasn’t really hit us yet. By the time march madness is over in college basketball, then it’ll start to become reality.

The MLB season won’t start on the top. The first four series have been canceled and now we’ll absolutely have a shortened season for this year’s MLB if any season. The good news, however, is that, as I said, we’ve already had to bet shortened seasons due to the pandemic. If you’re looking to bet the MLB and take advantage of the shortened season, listen to my tips below.

First off, everyone loves to bet futures. Remember the pandemic year? The Miami Marlins made the postseason. A shortened season means that we can see more flukey things like the Marlins making the playoffs. If you see a bottom-tier team that you think has potential, betting a future on them won’t be so bad after all. Maybe you think that the Tigers are going to add a ton of pieces and really come contenders this season.

The Tigers added Eduardo Rodriguez as their number one starter, brought in Javier Báez to play shortstop, and now have a legitimate catcher in Tucker Barnhart. So in a shortened season, maybe the Tigers are a legitimate threat to make the postseason. You can bet that at a very good and valuable price.

If you’re not a futures guy and would rather bet on a game-to-game basis, that’s totally fine. You’re like me. But there’s really nothing to change in your approach unless there are different rule changes compared to last season.

Before betting on games this season, make sure you understand different rule changes and how that affects what players are going to do next season. If there’s a limit of seconds between pitches, a relief pitcher might start to struggle later in an inning, especially if guys are on base. Also, make sure to understand that earlier in the season, weather plays more of a factor. The more humid it gets, the more offense we’ll see. Unless Jacob deGrom is on the mound, of course.

For over-backers, seeing no baseball in April probably isn’t nearly as bad as not seeing any baseball in the middle of July in the summer.

Lastly, remember it’s still a grind. You don’t need to make up for lost days and bet on more games than you’d normally bet on. Just take it day by day and if you are consistent with your craft, results will show throughout the entire MLB season.

There will be winning streaks and losing streaks and bad beats with some insane home runs in the final inning to cash your ticket. Stay the course and enjoy the journey. Don’t get high and don’t get low. Just keep on doing what you do and eventually, you will see positive results.
