If you ever wondered what it was like to get the newspaper and look at the box scores a century ago, to see what Babe Ruth did on a daily basis, it is the same thing with all the modern technology for Shohei Ohtani. He is a marvel behind marvels in the sport of baseball, doing something we have never seen, or often just heard of.

Colorado University is again leaving a conference for more money, returning to the Big 12. Denver head coach Sean Peyton speaks his mind about the Broncos of 2022. This and our weekend free picks and top trends. Thanks for reading.

About Last Night…

MLB

The L.A. Angels have decided to not trade Shohei Ohtani, looking to make a playoff run, hoping it shows him they want to win. The Angels have gone heavy the last two drafts for starting pitching and have some good young everyday players that are helping Ohtani and Trout out now. Yesterday, Ohtani tossed a complete game one-hit shutout in the first game of the doubleheader. In the next contest, all Ohtani did was stretch his lead in home runs to 38 with two bombs in the Halos sweep of Detroit (at basically -125 odds in both games). Of course, that is crazy, and we found this.

With just five games in baseball Thursday, nothing of importance could happen, right? Welp, it is baseball. Besides Ohtani's magic, Thursday was the first time in MLB history there were four multi-HR games on a day with five or fewer games played according to @EliasSports. For context, there have been about 5,000 days in MLB history where five or fewer games were played.

NCAAF

The Colorado Buffaloes are leaving the Pac-12 and returning to the Big 12. That could signal Utah and both Arizona schools will follow next, but not for sure. Reports have the Big 12 very interested in Connecticut, looking to ultimately make separate deals for football and what would be its even more valuable basketball product.

If Colorado is willing to leave the Pac-12, this looks like the beginning of the end for that conference.

The Buzz

NFL – Injuries Already Impacting Teams

It was not a good day for the NFL with Joe Burrow and Jalen Ramsey carted off the field. Ramsey will need knee surgery and though he is expected to play again this season, that won’t be determined until after his knee is repaired.

Burrow was already wearing a sleeve on his calf when he came up lame. We’ll just have to see what the outcome is, but if you bet on Cincinnati to win the AFC North, the AFC or the Super Bowl, these are nervous times.

NFL – Sean Peyton Taking No Prisoners

New Denver head coach Sean Peyton is not looking to make friends in the coaching community.

While most agree that former coach Nathaniel Hackett looked over his head at Denver, Peyton said this about Hackett and his staff, “It might have been one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL. That’s how bad it was.” He also took shots at the New York Jets about them being on – Hard Knocks -, which is a reach as the Jets from coach Robert Saleh to his players have made it clear they wanted no part of this.

A run-of-the-mill Jets vs. Broncos Week 5 matchup now has bulletin board material.

Top Betting System

MLB – Rays vs. Astros (+103 ML)

Play against AL road teams like Tampa Bay with a slugging percentage of .440 or higher against a team with a bullpen WHIP of 1.35 or lower, who is batting .240 or worse over their last 20 games.

Since 2019, clubs like the Rays are 9-41 in this situation.

Out The Door

MLB – Time For a Change

With the addition of an extra wild card team in each league, MLB should move the trade deadline to August 16. It is clear teams that still have even a hope of making the playoffs are skittish about unloading players, knowing a five-game winning streak brings them back into contention.

By moving it back, that is more than two weeks of games played, where any team would have a better idea of where they are in a particular season and look towards the future.

NFL – Packers Fans and Front Office Likely Not Happy with Aaron Rodgers

On Wednesday, the Jets reworked Aaron Rodgers' contract, saving them 35 million in guaranteed money, which could help them build a better roster. Of course, Green Bay’s front office noticed this and wondered where this generosity was coming from, as they would have delighted to better their roster during Rodgers' prime years, but all he wanted was his cut.
