Kansas City pairing Mahomes and Kelce will be led by the MVP Quarterback Mahomes who has previous “The Match” experience from last year when with Josh Allen as his partner when they lost on the last hole to experienced NFL quarterback duo Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers.
In an interview before last year’s “The Match” Mahomes told reporters, that, “Golf has become a huge part of everything,” Mahomes said. “When I plan trips when I set up my off-season, I have to figure out places to play when I’m there.”
His partner, Travis Kelce has been a serious golfer for a while now, as a handicap of 11 indicates and in an interview with Golf Digest in 2021 admitted that Tiger Woods had influenced his style of golf.
Team Analysis – Stephen Curry & Klay Thompson

The Golden State Warrior teammates are led by two-time NBA MVP star Stephen Curry who is the outlier of The Match being off a +1 handicap at golf which when put into context means he is better than a scratch golfer. Indeed, he was good enough to play in two KFT events in 2017 and 2018, while he would also not look out of place in US Open qualifying at a mark of +1.
Curry also has previous “The Match” experience when he partnered with Peyton Manning to defeat Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley in 2020.
With Klay Thompson being relatively new to golf and an enthusiastic 15-handicapper, the pressure will be heaped on the thirty-five-year-old Curry to perform. That said, Thompson has been playing golf for several years now with Curry so they may have several cunning plans in place for the event.
It will be interesting to see how this duo handles it and certainly, Curry’s previous experience in 2020, can only help.
Who Wins? NFL or NBA?
- There is more guesswork than normal involved for this year’s edition of The Match so make sure you keep wagers modest and fun.
It could easily end up with Stephen Curry taking on both Mahomes and Kelce if Thompson does not settle, that said it is Kelce’s “The Match” debut.
Last year’s experience with Mahomes combined with his love of golf could be a huge factor in making the Kansas City Chiefs pairing a live force as the underdog. That enthusiasm and dedication to practice would be the key to being an improving 7-handicapper.
What I did notice when researching the match was that last year, in my article, Mahomes was off the same handicap which suggests he has been practicing without much competitive play, in which case, it is feasible that he is better than his 7.7 handicap.
For a modest win wager, while I enjoy this year’s “The Match”, I am going to trust that the combined team talents of the Kansas City Chief pair, and respectable golf games give us nice value as underdogs at the BetOnline generous price of (+250).
