Optimism for Collin Morikawa

Yes, at BMR we think there is reason for optimism regarding Collin Morikawa’s chances of a second Claret Jug in three years.

Firstly, the Royal Liverpool track will place a premium on good iron play and unusually players will be taking irons off the tee instead of woods on more occasions than normal. There is no better iron player in the sport than Collin Morikawa.

Secondly, at the recent Rocket Mortgage Classic, Collin Morikawa looked supremely focused when finishing runner-up in a sudden-death playoff to Rickie Fowler.

Thirdly, Morikawa will have no problems with the course on first look whether it plays soft or fast given his iron play, and remember he won at Royal St. Georges on course and Open debut two years ago.

The price of (+3500) is worth taking at our top U.S. betting sites in conjunction with a top-10 finish this week for Collin Morikawa.

2023 Open Championship

July 20 – July 23, 2023 at Royal Liverpool Golf Club

Course Notes

  • Royal Liverpool Golf Club
  • Hoylake, Merseyside
  • Designed by Harry Colt in 1895
  • Par 71, 7383 yards
  • Coastal Links
  • Bentgrass with Poa Annua Greens
  • Historically one of the easier Open tests on the rota with Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods winning the previous two with 17 and 18 under par respectively.
  • Hitting fairways is hugely important for golfers and indeed the year Tiger Woods won he barely hit a wooden club off the tee, hitting over 85% of fairways.

Previous Winners

Expected Weather Forecast

Currently, Royal Liverpool has a wet weather forecast for all four days, but with light winds, so keep an eye out for further detailed forecasts. If course plays wet, it will be easier to score unless rain is driving and fast.

Main Contenders and Betting Odds

Rory McIlroy (+700)

The Northern Irishman looks the most solid of favorites this week at Royal Liverpool. He has those good memories of his 2014 claret jug win here to draw on as well as some trending in form in recent weeks.

That culminated last week at the Scottish Open where he led pretty much from start to finish or was in the van, to win for the first time since the start of the year in the most impressive finish of back-to-back birdies.

McIlroy went out in the final group of last year's Open and this year's US Open and perhaps this is where his frustrating major championship drought ends and he lands a fifth career major.

Rickie Fowler (+22000)

The popular American finally got the monkey off his bag three weeks ago when winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic. That was his first win in five years, but his consistency has been stellar all year and the win was well overdue.

Remember the popular thirty-four-year-old Californian was runner-up here to Rory McIlroy and like the Northern Irishman has a perfect form profile this week.

Tommy Fleetwood (+2200)

There would be no more popular winner amongst golf fans and particularly those in the United Kingdom than local boy, Tommy Fleetwood. The problem with being the local boy is the expectations and distractions will be at a maximum for the popular Englishman.

I would be happy to see Tommy Fleetwood as Open champion but for the reasons above, I pass this week.

Tyrrell Hatton (+2500)

There will be nothing like those distractions for Tyrrell Hatton this week despite representing the home nation. For that reason, I like Tyrrell Hatton's chances this year given his sublime consistent form on the PGA Tour.

Keegan Bradley (+10000)

It's really started to look like Keegan Bradley is back to his best form that saw him land the PGA Championship early in his career. A win on his penultimate start at the Travelers Championship after winning last year's Zozo Championship indicates he is once again comfortable in the winner's circle and has some course experience here from 2014 to draw on.

Charl Schwartzel (+60000)

The South African former Masters champion managed a top-10 finish here in 2014. Not been in the greatest form on the LIV golf circuit but caught my eye in qualifying for the Open and at the recent LIV golf in London where he went low in round 2.

An interesting sleeper to consider in this week's props markets.
