Now Is the Time to Join the Tom Kim Tank Train

After a lull in proceedings, the Thomas the Tank Engine Train that is Tom Kim served notice that he is back at the platform and raring to go this week. Last week’s U.S. Open third round got golf fans excited that Kim would do the unthinkable, and shoot 59 in a US Open before a poor finishing stretch of holes.

It’s good to see the twenty-year-old South Korean phenom back on track after a couple of missed cuts recently and some concern over an injured wrist.

That could be perfect timing for Tom Kim as this week’s Travelers Championship has never been about the long hitters.  TPC River Highlands is more suited to those who can strategically attack from consistent finding of fairways, and greens, and that’s Kim’s strength in a nutshell.

With this week’s Travelers Championship being an elevated PGA Tour event, we get Tom Kim at an enhanced price of (+5000) at one of our top U.S. betting sites.

Travelers Championship

June 22 – June 25, 2023 at TPC River Highlands

Course Notes

  • TPC River Highlands
  • Cromwell
  • Connecticut
  • Par 70, 6852 yards
  • Undulating tree-lined Bentgrass/Poa fairways set on a bluff of land above the Connecticut River.
  • The spectacular finishing stretch of risk-reward holes from 15-17 set around a four-acre lake.
  • Bentgrass/Poa Annua greens on the slowish side

Key stats are often thought to be GIR and others related to plotters who can strategically manage the track.  To illustrate that, Jim Furyk is the record holder with 58 but don’t rule out the longer hitters as Dustin Johnson and Will Gordon amongst others have proved in recent years.

Recent Champions

Weather

A mainly settled forecast in Hartford, Connecticut this week with potential delays at the weekend with some thunderstorms due.

The Leading Contenders

Scottie Scheffler (+700)

A tough week at the US Open last week will not help Scheffler’s cause this week at a track he is yet to excel on

Rory McIlroy (+900)

Another who had a tough week at the US Open but he has made a fast start here on several occasions to justify checking out the Northern Irishman’s price in the First Round Leader Market

Xander Schauffele (+1200)

Schauffele is the defending champion and after falling away at last week’s Open, I will be opposing him and the others at the top of the market

Value Georgia Range

Russell Henley (+6000)

Russell Henley let a winning chance slip here at the Travelers in 2016 when a final round of 73 undid all his good work.  Henley has been playing some fantastic golf lately and redemption looks a reality this week for the thirty-four-year-old from Georgia.

Harris English (+6600)

The 2021 champion Harris English has been in superb form recently with his tee-to-green stats making impressive reading. If he has anything left in the locker after last week’s exertions, the Georgia man must be strongly considered.

Brian Harman (+10000)

The diminutive Brian Harman is a real course specialist here at River Highlands with a phenomenal plethora of form which reads - 5 top 10s in the last eight years. The thirty-six-year-old is also from Georgia and competed strongly last week

Debutants and Longshots

Ludvig Aberg (+12500)

Highly decorated Swedish amateur who turned professional three weeks ago and debuted at the Canadian Open on the 25th. Won twice in the Nordic Golf league as an amateur in 2020 and has dominated the Collegiate scene for Texas Tech since.

Sam Bennett (+25000)

Sam Bennett’s promotion to the big league has been seamless after winning last year’s American Amateur Championship. His impressive Masters performance on debut as an amateur in April was outstanding and since turning professional at the Canadian Open, and last week’s U.S. Open where he finished just outside of the top 40.

CT Pan (+25000)

CT Pan was an impressive 3rd at the Canadian Open after being 4th at the Byron Nelson Classic, the event before. Returning from a wrist injury means the limited starts the Taiwanese golfer is getting, could be a blessing in disguise and needs respecting again this week at a track he has played well at in the past.
