Top Pick: #8 Angel of Empire to Win and Place at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review)

This Saturday will conclude the Triple Crown action when the ‘test of champions’ takes place at Belmont Park. The Belmont Stakes appears to be the most competitive of all Triple Crown races despite the elusive honor being unachievable once again, with Preakness winner National Treasure returning to take on one-time Kentucky Derby favorites, Forte, and Angel of Empire.

There is also a horse with the pedigree to go the much longer distance in Tapit Trice and seemingly two long shots that could help the house with Hit Show and Arcangelo.

Keep in mind that the leading offshore betting platforms have the freedom to provide the same horse racing markets, regardless of where you are located.

Unlike U.S. sportsbooks, which are required to adhere to state laws, offshore sites are not bound by such restrictions. Since online horse racing is not regulated in every state, it’s advisable to consult our comprehensive guide to the finest offshore betting sites for the 2023 Belmont Stakes.

Belmont Betting Tips

13 of the last 20 Belmont winners raced in the Kentucky Derby. And 10 of those did not race again until the Belmont. Consider Tapit Trice, Hit Show, and Angel of Empire.

For all or most of the horses in this race, the 1½ miles is likely to be the longest they will ever run. In 14 of the past 16 Belmonts, the winner was sired by horses that had won at least one Grade 1 race of at least 11/8 miles. Forte fits the bill here.

National Treasure won the Preakness three weeks ago and only three of the winners leaving Baltimore came to New York and won the Belmont since 2001.

This could be tricky. Just six of the last 20 favorites have gone on to win this race. However, the fave has taken three in a row.

Win Candidates

Forte

Forte was the two-year champion of his division, and by winning six of seven races, he was a deserving favorite. However, if you are not active for horse bettors to see if a horse is improving, going backward, or not moving forward, they can forget about you.

On Saturday, it will be 70 days since we saw Forte race, and while there are not many negatives, sharp horse bettors look at his diminished Beyer ratings since hitting triple digits. (100-98-95) Still, a definite contender.

Tapit Trice

For those that follow the pedigree of horses to help make horse picks, Tapit Trice fits the bill. Veteran pony players not only see the pedigree, but a horse built to go the distance with his churning style that can make up ground when others are tiring. Though Double-T has done little to show he’s ready for the moment, his odds at the top US books are not likely to change much, currently being the No. 2 choice.

Angel of Empire

Angel of Empire has improved on each of his latest speed ratings, coming in at 104 at the Derby. He was charging at the end in finishing third and might have done better when boxed in on the far turn.

Trainer Brad Cox passed on the Preakness for this spot, and two years later he brought Essential Quality into the same situation and won.

National Treasure

The Preakness champ National Treasure looks to go two for two in the crowned jewels. The consistent speed is there (94-95-98) and trainer Bob Baffert knows how to run his top horses in this race, having won with Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify along with Point Given (2001).

Jockey John Velazquez is well known for getting the most out of his horse and the odds are actually favorable for a good payday with a victory.

Longshots

Opinions are mixed on both our longshots and that makes perfect sense because they are longshots.

Hit Show

This horse has shown continued improvement and was a solid 5th at Churchill on Derby Day, running hard at the end after having a less-than-ideal trip until going wide around the far turn.

HS has good tactical speed and can most certainly be a factor with an even pace throughout.

Arcangelo

Though the Peter Pan Stakes is not thought of as a race that determines Triple Crown winners, Arcangelo exited as the winner, which greatly improved his stock with a 97 Beyer rating.

Having to travel three extra furlongs could be a challenge, yet, his pedigree suggests this is not an impossible assignment. Like Hit Show, Arcangelo at the very least is on a superfecta ticket, and maybe a lot more.
