Both the Dodgers overall and Yoshinobu Yamamoto individually are starting to resemble what was expected entering the season, and we are betting on Los Angeles to keep rolling against Zac Gallen and the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
This is More Like It
The Dodgers were expected to be dominant this year, but they did not look that way while starting the season 12-11. However, they are 7-2 since then with their offense starting to bludgeon teams, averaging 7.29 runs in the seven wins. And Yakamoto is also rounding to form, starting to justify his enormous contract after having success in Japan.
It is not as if Yakamoto’s overall numbers are bad by any means. He has a 3.54 ERA and 2.63 xFIP through six starts, with that xFIP being the sixth-best in baseball among pitchers with at least 20 innings. But he has been improving while getting acclimated to the USA, and his last start was his best yet as he tossed six scoreless innings allowing four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Is He OK?
Gallen had a breakout season last year going 17-9 with a 3.47 ERA and 3.39 FIP, and he has matched that in six starts this season. He enters at 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA and 3.19 xFIP. However, the two losses have come in his last two starts, during which he was off form allowing eight earned runs over 10 innings.
Zac also tweaked a hamstring in his last outing, and it was questionable whether he would be able to make this start before getting cleared following a bullpen session Monday. However, there is still some concern following consecutive atypical starts, and it does not help facing a hot Dodger offense that now leads the majors in wRC+ against right-handers at 130.
We have Yakamoto rated ahead of Gallen as it is. When you add in Gallen’s off-form and injury concern as well as the Dodgers’ hot offense, we are betting the Dodgers as moderate road favorites in the desert, at -130 betting odds.
