House approves bill on TikTok that would force sale or effectively ban company

WASHINGTON – The House approved a bill Wednesday that would force TikTok’s parent company to sell the popular social media app or face a practical ban in the U.S.

President Joe Biden has said he would sign it if it makes it to his desk, but the legislation’s fate is uncertain in the Senate, where the bill has proved much more divisive. The bill cleared the House 352 to 65 with one member voting present.

TikTok launched an intense lobbying campaign ahead of the House vote, urging its users to call their representatives and urge them to vote against the bill. The company’s CEO Shou Chew also visited Capitol Hill on Tuesday in an effort to persuade lawmakers – mainly senators – to oppose it.

Former President Donald Trump waded into the debate as well, coming out against the bill and posting on Truth Social, his social media app, “If you get rid of TikTok, Facebook and Zuckerschmuck will double their business,” referring to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The bill was fast tracked to the House floor after it was approved by the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee last week by a unanimous vote of 50-0, a stunning, unusual sight for the lower chamber.

The legislation’s proponents argue the app poses national security risks because its parent company, ByteDance, is based in Beijing and may expose American user data to Chinese government surveillance.

So now Trump reasoned publicly on CNBC that banning Tik Tok is a bad because it would help Facebook, and Trump doesn't want to benefit Facebook.

Looks like National Security took a back seat once the megadonor chimed in.

Those issues you are talking about start in the home, with parents, caregivers, and family, not with more government intervention.

Now it's up to the government, I suppose, to intervene with education, not policy and restrictions.

Sooooo, it sounds like TikTok is being used by the Chinese to influence politics overtly, not in some secretive way.

Funny thing is people called their reps and said TikTok told them to call.

I was just talking about all of social media in general

It’s no coincidence the decline of everything started & continues to worsen as social media grows

Even if we still allowed & restricted such apps/sites to PC only, the damage wouldn’t be near as bad as on smart phones where millions of ppl can spread their propaganda instantaneously & argue with each other ‘face to face’ despite being thousands of miles apart

They are concerned the the parent company ByteDance will share browser and geolocation information of Americans with the Chinese Gov't.

ByteDance says they won't do that, but we know Chinese companies often have no choice.

Congress says TikTok must sell to an American company to continue operating in the US.

But a couple years ago they initiated Project Texas. This was a US Gov't, TikTok, and Oracle joint venture that would put all the American info on servers in Texas that could not be connected to China, keeping the info safe.

Not sure what happened with that.

Welp, they did it. Lumped in with a bill to confiscates Russina assets along with providing aid to Ukraine, Taiwain, and Israel the House has voted to ban the Tok.

The Senate will pass it and Biden will sign it and when that happens the Tok will have to sell to an American company and if they don't, they don't have to go home, but they have to get the fukk out of the US.

I'm sure there will be plans to divest and keep it operating in the US.
