conference MVP for UCLA in hoops

all conference RB for football and led nation in punt returns in back to back year

national champ in long jump would have gone to Olympics if they had them in 1940 or 1944

If you want to complain about Jackie Robinson, you can complain about the fact that he was not actually the first black player in major league basetball. Those was Willard Brown and Hank Thompson. Thompson was actually a better player than Robinson. It's too bad nobody knows about him.

I'm not sure why Robinson is considered the first black player in major league baseball except for maybe he was the first player a team committed to playing every day and he played for the Dodgers which were the most celebrated team.

How good was Willard Brown? At the age of 32, he played less than half a year in the major leagues and if he just played 2/3s of the season, he would have had 50 doubles, 15 triples and 15 home runs and 140 RBIs. Major League Baseball had seen enough. They did not want to see any more. The next year he hit over .400 in the negro leagues in Robinson's first year.

Yet - colleges today single out Columbus as the “evil man who destroyed the native Americans way of life” and its Columbus Day the lefties protest.

Did blacks discriminate and economically oppress whites - yes, in fact they did. Not as well publicized- but there were several successful black owned business who catered solely to blacks. They sought to exclude whites from participation - even honest whites who sought participation in the enterprise without control. Again - history doesn’t teach that these days as it’s not as grabbing of a headline as the dominant majority oppressing the minority.

Finally - why does the largest minority warrant extra attention over any other oppressed minority ? Thought it was a black man who said “an injustice to one is an injustice to all” ? Oppression is wrong. Aren’t females a majority over males - yet we continually here how female sports are “oppressed” and not treated equally to their male counterparts. Again - the fact there are MORE people in an oppressed class only supports there is less reason for them to argue that they are wrongfully discriminated against - as they have the greater ability to speak out and demand fairness. Yet we continue to push the same narrative of one class isn’t being treated fairly - while a majority of the class opt not to play the sport in favor of other sports.

Why are you trying to compare some individual blacks to an actual systemic legal structure that implemented discrimination. Sounds like you just want to hit some bullet points. Good luck in your endeavors. I really don’t have time for nonsense.

I think we all agree. J rob most overrated for crossing color barriers.

most under rated for great multi sport athlete

He was very good as an athlete.

Best multi sport - he is up there - Thorpe and Jim Brown level of excellence.

I think it’s important to remember baseball is more
than athletic ability. Plenty of guys are great athletes - think Deion Sanders. The fact you can run fast and jump high can make you a terrific track and field and football player for example. Throwing a baseball or hitting it requires a whole different skill set. Sure - you can steal 100 bags of you manage to get on base - or club the ball 500 feet if you get ahold of it - but hitting .300 or throwing 90+ with any degree of accuracy aren’t athletic feats - they are SKILLS. Even being a great fielder is a mix of speed and skill - just because you can get to the ball in the outfield doesn’t mean you can track and catch it.

The reason Jackie Robinson is celebrated is because he was the first black player. He was a great baseball player. He was specifically chosen because he was considered to be the best person to do it because he was considered to have the personality to do it. That is why he is celebrated. Not because he experienced racism. He is considered to have made it possible for the black players that followed.

As with anything, people love the idea of something. He is made into a myth. Just like white Americans make the Founding Fathers into Gods when they were really just guys looking out for their own economic interests.
