The question surrounding who will perform at halftime of the Super Bowl always causes rumors to swirl, but this year, the speculation is at a fever pitch, as Taylor Swift is the act most of America wants to see, considering her pending nuptials with Travis Kelce.
NFL’s Gift – Taylor Swift
There hasn’t been a pop star or band that has amassed a legion of fans like Taylor Swift since the Beatles and their British Invasion back in the 1960s. Swifties have become almost cult-like in their adoration of their pop princess, and although not everyone is smitten with the 14x Grammy Award winner, she is a publicity magnet, and no organization enjoys the spotlight more than the National Football League.
Rumor and innuendo have become commonplace when it comes to speculating on the Super Bowl Halftime performers, but this year, the spotlight is directly on Taylor Swift, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has done nothing to douse those flames. As the league begins its first week of the season, the NFL is being talked about by Taylor Swift fans who are not necessarily football fans.
Keeping the Buzz Alive
Goodell recently appeared on NBC’s “Today” show, and the conversation eventually turned to the Super Bowl and whether a performer, namely Taylor Swift, had been contracted to play in front of the world’s biggest TV audience.
“We would always love to have Taylor play. She is a special, special talent, and obviously she would be welcome at any time,” Goodell said when asked if Swift was invited to play the Super Bowl.
“Is it in the works?” Today show host Savannah Guthrie asked.
“I can’t tell you anything about it,” Goodell replied.
“Is it a maybe?” Guthrie followed up.
“It’s a maybe,” Goodell hedged.
Well, there you have it. Nothing definite, only pure speculation, just the way Roger Goodell and the NFL want it. As long as the league is being talked about, he and the owners are happy.
Written in the Stars
Swifties who are inclined to read the tea leaves or believe in numerology will likely go all in with what they perceive as a cosmic sign that Taylor Swift will be performing at the halftime of the Super Bowl. For instance, Levi’s Stadium, home of Super Bowl LX, is also home to the 49ers, and 4+9 = 13, which is the number of Travis Kelce’s jersey.
And if we are traveling down this road, we might also note that Swift will no longer have a conflict of interest, as Apple Music and not Pepsi Cola is the official sponsor of the Super Bowl. If you didn’t know, Swift signed a deal with Coca-Cola years ago, so there will be no awkwardness whatsoever.
Lastly, Swift’s next album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” comes out on October 3rd, which means it will not be Grammy eligible, but highlighting all of her hits at a venue that will draw hundreds of millions of viewers is the perfect recipe for becoming the odds-on favorite in the following iteration of the Grammys.
Taylor Swift is not a neophyte when it comes to working with the NFL either, as she sang the national anthem at the Detroit Lions’ Thanksgiving Day game in 2006 and at the 2010 NFL kickoff concert in New Orleans. Maybe we will see her sing part of her expansive catalog at the Super Bowl on February 8th!
