Week 1 of the NFL season brings a matchup of NFC East division rivals, with the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Dallas Cowboys. While the attention will understandably focus on what happens on the field, what’s taking place within betting markets is intriguing.
At top offshore sportsbooks like BookMaker, the steam towards the Eagles reveal how bettors are approaching the Cowboys as they prepare for life after Micah Parsons.
Cowboys vs. Eagles: Sharps Early on Philly, Public Steam Continues
“Sharp money beat us to the news about the Micah Parsons trade, but to be fair we were heavy on sharp action on the Eagles since the game opened months ago. Money will be coming in until the coin is in the air, but I can’t imagine a world in which we won’t need the Boys for a big decision.”
— BookMaker.eu lines manager Jack S. tells BMR
This is a case where taking the Eagles at home was always the sharp play. Since 2000, the defending Super Bowl champion is 15-9-1 against the spread. The Eagles are favorites in this game, so the Cowboys were always overmatched here.
But now, after Dallas shockingly traded their best defensive player in Parsons, the public has caught on the line has been steamed up. The point spread opened at Eagles -6.5 and has now been steamed up as high as Eagles -9 according to the latest NFL odds.
Market takeaway: With that in mind, Bookmaker and other sportsbooks are hoping for a Cowboys cover to offset this flurry of Eagles action. Both public and sharp money favor the defending champs here, but the spread continues to rise.
Sharp Money Leans for Week 1
According to Bookmaker, they’ve received “Sharp money on the Jaguars, Patriots, and Under 43 in 49ers vs Seahawks.”
The Jaguars are short home favorites against the Panthers. Jacksonville is poised to bounce back from a disappointing season now that former Bucs’ stud offensive coordinator Liam Coen is calling the shots. While the Panthers are improved, Bryce Young is still an unproven quarterback.
The Patriots are a popular pick to make the playoffs this season, as new head coach Mike Vrabel has a knack for getting the most out of his players, consistently overperforming expectations while with the Titans. Meanwhile, the Raiders will try to adjust to a brand new roster led by Geno Smith and Ashton Jeanty.
Sharps likely view the 49ers vs Seahawks game as a closely-contested divisional matchup that favors a low-scoring affair due to a young and improving Seattle defense. It’s an underrated group coached up by an elite former defensive coordinator in Mike Macdonald.
Biggest Needs for the House in Week 1
The biggest needs for Bookmaker this week are Steelers -3 at the Jets, Commanders -6 vs the Giants, and Rams -2.5 vs the Texans.
It’s clear that most are fading Aaron Rodgers in his debut, taking on his former team on the road. But there appears to be a bit too much public confidence in Justin Fields against a tough defense.
There’s also a chance that most are overthinking the Giants vs Commanders matchup, fading a team led by Jayden Daniels in a winnable home matchup.
As for the Rams, most are scared off by Matthew Stafford, who missed time in camp with a back injury. Facing a tough Texans pass rush, the majority of bettors are unwilling to ride with him, even at home.
It will be interesting to see if the public or house wins on these matchups.
