Cracks in the Crown: Exploiting the Kings’ Defensive Woes
Today, the team that I want to attack is the Los Angeles Kings.
The Kings suffered a major loss in the form of Vladislav Gavrikov, who signed with the New York Rangers. The Kings pursued Gavrikov aggressively because they understand that he is a significant component of their defense.
They lack a single player to replace him now. Accordingly, in their season-opener, they allowed four goals to Colorado.
Given this team breakdown, it’s clear that the best player props will be found on the side of Vegas. My favorite player tonight is Shea Theodore, who is coming off a career-best season with 57 points.
He is observed to be aggressive in power-play situations and will play a bigger role in general with Alex Pietrangelo having stepped away from the team. Theodore is listed at -115 at Bovada to score one or more points.
Why Toronto’s Maccelli and Domi Are Set to Shine
Another team that I want to attack is Montreal.
The Canadiens are a very young team with a lot of growing to do, especially on the road and, as several team-wide statistics last year show, especially on defense in general. For point-scorers on their opponent’s team, Toronto, I like Matias Maccelli at +110 and Max Domi at +135 to score at least one or more point.
Maccelli had a career-best year in 2023-2024 when he was a key figure in Arizona. He accumulated 57 points that year. After a down season in a tough spot in Utah last year, he will be extra motivated to reassert himself.
Indeed, his preseason was strong — he accumulated four points, with all of those points coming off assists.
As for Domi, he is known to make surrounding players better with his unique speed and passing ability. He ranked among the top players last year in the highest recorded speed, for example. With players around him generally on the slow and aging side, he is extra valuable to Toronto this year.
I find the price on him to undervalue him.
Anytime Goal Scorer Props Today
I wish to reiterate that the Kings are worth fading today, particularly because of their defense.
The spot for their defense is extra bad tonight because their season-opening debacle was yesterday. So, they are currently on the second leg of a back-to-back and have also traveled to play on the road tonight.
Conversely, Vegas gets its season-opener at home tonight.
The Golden Knights scored eight goals in this spot last year. So, for player props, it’s just a matter of picking our favorite Vegas goal-scorers. Mitch Marner is a new addition to the team who fans commonly cite as one of the league’s best passers.
His addition to the team will help players around him improve. As anytime goal-scorers, Jack Eichel at +175 with Bovada and Pavel Dorofeyev at +230 at Bovada are both worth investing in.
Eichel is an elite player who is coming off a season in which he amassed 94 points, easily his career best. Dorofeyev likewise took a major step forward last season with 52 points, which was twice as many as his previous career high.
Dorofeyev has sustained a superb shooting percentage for extended periods in his career, which positions him to be an even better finisher in this year’s version of the Knights. With Marner helping these players out and with the spot against the Kings being so good tonight, you can count on both players to score a goal in their game.
Goalie Save Props Today
The Calgary-Edmonton game tonight will be great for the goalies. Accordingly, I will recommend Dustin Wolf over 27.5 saves at -120 and Stuart Skinner over 24.5 saves at -105 with Bovada.
Wolf is a rising star who was a member of the NHL’s All-Rookie Team last year.
Skinner’s lower posted save total accords with the negative public perception of him. He gets a lot of criticism from fans. However, he is a big keeper who has the natural advantage of covering most of the goal.
With his size at 6-4, the outlook for him is always hopeful. He will impress people this year because, over the offseason, he increased his agility, thus addressing a major point of previous criticism against him.
Both goalies are in a great spot because key Calgary wing Jonathan Huberdeau is injured, debilitating Calgary’s offense. As for Edmonton, the Oilers are slow starters. Last season, they were shut out in their first game and scored all of three goals in their first three games.
Expect both goalies to excel at protecting their respective nets tonight, as they amass saves in what will be a lower-scoring affair.
