Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Sunday, February 12, 2023 – 06:30 PM EST at State Farm Stadium
Super Bowl 57 will be the fourth time the greater Phoenix area has hosted the big game.
SB XXX featured the Dallas Cowboys beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 from Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe on the campus of Arizona State.
SB XLII in Glendale at what was then called the University of Phoenix Stadium saw the unbeaten New England Patriots upset by the New York Giants 17-14.
Seahawks fans will never forget SB XLIX, also in Glendale, as Seattle should have punched in the winning touchdown by using Marshawn Lynch at the goal line in the final minute but opted for a Russell Wilson pass, which was intercepted by the Patriots as they held on for a 28-24 win.
For what it’s worth, the NFC is 2-1 in Phoenix-area Super Bowls and should be 3-0.
The Eagles are currently -1.5 for SB 57 at top-rated online sportsbooks.
No Home-Field Advantage This Time
The Super Bowl venue absolutely mattered the past two years because it was on the home field of the eventual champion.
Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Bucs hosted SB LV against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs and dominated in a 31-9 victory as Mahomes was dealing with an injury (like now) and was under siege all night by the Tampa Bay pass rush.
Be aware that the Philadelphia Eagles led the NFL in the regular season with a franchise-record 70 sacks, two shy of the NFL single-season record.
The Bucs didn’t get a huge fan boost in that game because attendance was limited to about 23,000 due to COVID.
Last year, the Los Angeles Rams hosted the Super Bowl and beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20.
Yes, the Rams got a boost from some hometown fans but it wasn’t a massive one like a regular-season game.
The average NFL fan can’t afford to go to a Super Bowl. It’s mostly corporations buying tickets and fans who don’t really care who wins but just being involved in the experience.
Some Common Factors
If Sunday’s game were at a venue of one of the teams’ divisional rivals, then I might say there was a small advantage because of familiarity.
By that I mean, an AFC West location for Kansas City -- as the Chiefs play every year at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (which hosts the SB next year), and Empower Field at Mile High in Denver.
For Philadelphia, it visits NFC East locations MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (Giants), AT&T Stadium in Arlington (Cowboys), and FedExField in Maryland (Commanders) once per year.
Both Kansas City and Philadelphia did play at State Farm Stadium in the 2022 regular season and both won there against Arizona, meaning either the Chiefs or Eagles will have one more win this season than the Cardinals, who were 1-7 at home.
KC opened the season at the Cardinals and rolled 44-21 behind five Patrick Mahomes touchdown passes. Travis Kelce caught eight passes for 121 yards and a touchdown.
In Week 5, the Eagles were in the desert and won 20-17. Jalen Hurts ran for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns and held on after Matt Ammendola's late field-goal attempt for the Cardinals sailed wide right.
The Cardinals never led but looked as if they would push the game into overtime until Ammendola missed the 43-yarder.
Other Factors
Both Kansas City and Philadelphia play in outdoor stadiums, so there’s no advantage in that regard with State Farm Stadium, a dome.
The Chiefs were 4-5 ATS on the NFL odds in nine away games during the regular season, while the Eagles were 2-6 ATS.
This will be the eighth Super Bowl matchup between No. 1 seeds since 1990 and the winner will be the top seed to win the SB since the Eagles in the 2017 season.
This writer doesn’t see any edge regarding the venue.
