Josh Allen emerges as the top bet to win the 2022 NFL MVP award, nudging ahead of the usual suspects that include Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, and the recently unretired Tom Brady, who is a new addition to the list of contenders at the best online sportsbook exchange after he announced his return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on social media on Sunday, March 13, 2022.

The Buffalo Bills quarterback didn’t open as the top favorite in MVP betting markets. That principality belonged to Patrick Mahomes predominantly when markets initially went to press for the upcoming NFL season. Some books served up Mahomes as the co-favorite alongside reigning MVP champion Aaron Rodgers.

Markets are never static though. With free agency fast approaching and teams getting their houses in order, oddsmakers are beginning to get a better sense of the rosters around these and other quarterbacks and whether they’ll be as strong as they were in 2021 due to the various cap situations each franchise faces.

The ebb and flow of players in the offseason is unavoidable, but where those moves are significant, it prompts some significant movement on the NFL futures board. As things currently stand, Allen appears to be the beneficiary of moves that are occurring elsewhere, climbing into the top spot for the coveted honor as a result.

Josh Allen +600

The Buffalo Bills quarterback enjoyed a solid 2021 campaign. He threw for 4.407 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions through 17 games as he led the Bills to an 11-6-0 record and the AFC East title for a second straight season.

The Bills started the season brightly and often looked like world-beaters with Allen as the offensive pivot. At one point during their 2021 campaign, after stunning the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, 38-20, in Week 5, the Bills were tipped as the top bet to win Super Bowl 56.

However, a bizarre defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars and losses to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers ultimately took the shine off Allen’s MVP credibility with voters.

Patrick Mahomes +900

Former MVP winner Patrick Mahomes had his fair share of struggles in 2021, but he still managed to finish among the top five quarterbacks on the NFL‘s leader board. Mahomes threw for 4,839 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions as he lifted the Kansas City Chiefs to a sixth straight AFC West title and fourth since the young gun took over at the helm of the offense from Alex Smith.

Besides Mahomes’ glittering stats, the thing that truly underscores his MVP odds is a track record of success against the best quarterbacks and teams in the league and a reputation borne out through the years for being one of the toughest quarterbacks to beat. Since Mahomes took over, the Chiefs have reached the AFC Championship game or better.

Aaron Rodgers +1000

Even though Aaron Rodgers is coming off back-to-back MVP wins and a fourth career MVP title in 2021, the Future Hall of Fame quarterback isn’t favored to win the coveted award anymore. That’s according to the recently updated MVP Futures with many of the best sportsbooks in the online gambling industry, including BetOnline Sportsbook (visit our BetOnline review).

BetOnline lists Rodgers among the top bets to win, but with odds of +1000, the 38-year-old signal-caller has drifted behind several other candidates. These are Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Tom Brady. However, he’s also surprisingly fallen behind both Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson in this market. Headscratcher or what? The former was traded to the Denver Broncos last week while the latter didn’t play at all in 2021 and is still currently without a fixed team.

Rodgers recently confirmed he would be returning to the Green Bay Packers for another season. However, the future status of wide receiver Davante Adams with the Packers is up in the air. Adams is one of the best and most trusted offensive targets on the Packers’ offense and a big reason behind Rodgers’ back-to-back MVP-calibre seasons.

Green Bay tried to take the franchise tag route with Adams, but the star wideout informed the team that he would not be playing under those circumstances in 2022. Whether Adams and the Packers can reach an extension agreement will be deciding. One would expect Rodgers’ stock would go up if Adams remains in Green Bay.
