Danny Barlow vs. Nikolay Veretennikov
UFC Vegas 95 Welterweight Bout
Barlow: The Story So Far
The future could be bright for Danny Barlow, one of the UFC’s latest welterweight roster editions who’s run through his last five opponents with KO/TKO victories and remains unblemished as a pro behind an 8-0 record.
While he’s still untested at an elite level, it’s difficult to ignore the outings of Barlow thus far; he’s made the opposition look weak, and with an emphatic striking skill set posed from a southpaw stance, he’s an exciting prospect to keep our eyes on.
- Barlow Pro MMA Record: 8-0-0
- Barlow Knockout Wins: 5
- Barlow Submission Wins: 1
Veretennikov: The Story So Far
Nikolay Veretennikov is another striking-based prospect who’s collected most of his pro career wins via knockout. Saturday will mark his UFC debut, and more worryingly, it’s on short notice, but if there’s one factor we can rely on, it’s that he’ll be happy to engage in a striking war with a stylistic opponent such as Barlow.
- Veretennikov Pro MMA Record: 12-4-0
- Veretennikov Knockout Wins: 9
- Veretennikov Submission Wins: 1
UFC Vegas 95 Barlow vs. Veretennikov: Skillset Breakdown
It doesn’t take long to find red flags in Veretennikov’s record, and while you can watch his fast fights and be impressed by the aggression and high KO ratio he’s collected, seeing him struggle versus the only UFC caliber of opponent he’s fought to date, Michael Morales, is a cause for concern.
Contrastingly, Barlow is unbeaten and already dog-walked Josh Quinlan in his UFC debut. It may have taken three rounds to accomplish, but Quinlan was known for his durability and had never been stopped via strikes previously.
Under 2.5 Rounds Reasoning
The last MMA component we should expect in this contest is grappling. Both fighters love to strike, and as the larger, more physically imposing of the two, I’d side with Barlow finding the kill shot against an opponent making his debut on short notice.
However, with the under 2.5 rounds set at a respectable price of -165, there’s no need to back the moneyline. Veretennikov has gone the distance in just 1 of his previous 5 pro bouts, and Barlow returns from four consecutive wins where he’s collected the knockout, three of which arrived in the first round.
We’re banking on violence, and with two potent knockout artists, expect this fight to end before the judges intervene to cash our Under 2.5 rounds.
UFC Parlay Leg 1: Under 2.5 Rounds (-165) at BetOnline
Jose Mariscal vs. Damon Jackson
UFC Vegas 95 Featherweight Bout
Mariscal: The Story So Far
Elevation Fight, Team standout Chepe Mariscal, has been overlooked during his UFC tenure thus far, and I’ll be the first to admit I was once one of those people underrating his abilities.
Since joining the UFC last year, he’s remained active and collected three straight wins, including decision victories over two dangerous strikers in, Trevor Peek and Morgan Charriere.
- Mariscal Pro MMA Record: 16-6-0
- Mariscal Knockout Wins: 7
- Mariscal Submission Wins: 3
Jackson: The Story So Far
It’s hard not to get behind ‘The Leech. ‘ He’s a crafty veteran who’s still performing to the best of his abilities, aged 35. Although a 6-4-1-1 record is a sight for sore eyes, the only one-sided defeats for the promotion came against a top-ranked Dan Ige and the current featherweight champ, Ilia Topuria.
- Jackson Pro MMA Record: 23-6-1
- Jackson Knockout Wins: 4
- Jackson Submission Wins: 15
UFC Vegas 95 Mariscal vs. Jackson: Skillset Breakdown
It’s no secret that Jackson’s most favored path to victory is through a grappling game plan, and his BJJ black belt has assisted him with 15 of his 23 wins to date. The problem is that Mariscal embodies MMA; his defensive attributes in both wrestling and striking situations have undoubtedly evolved over the last two years, and knocking out his current six-fight win streak won’t be a simple task.
This doesn’t suggest Jackson is lost on the feet, but when two versatile fighters go head-to-head, we’re forced to consider outside variables as the x-factor in deciding on a viable winner.
Mariscal Moneyline Reasoning
While I’m completely aware that Jackson hasn’t shown signs of slowing down as he ages, I do believe it’ll be a factor in his volume and speed. As the combination striker of the two with respectable takedown defense to fend off Jackson’s grappling work and as the younger man who’ll definitely be faster, Mariscal is the side here, as I expect him to notch his first win over an experienced opponent via the scorecards.
