Right-hander Javier Assad (6-4, 3.15 ERA, 1.34 WHIP) will do the honors for the Cubbies on Saturday after posting a solid seven innings of work in his last effort.
Assad was beaten by the long ball twice last Sunday after allowing only six hits over seven full innings in a 7-2 loss to the Marlins. The 27-year-old has been locked on in August, delivering a 2.84 ERA for the month.
Nationals Pitching Profile
Washington will send rookie DJ Herz (2-6, 3.84 ERA, 1.28 WHIP) to the hill, where he will attempt to replicate a stellar outing in his last start. The 23-year-old southpaw spun an absolute gem over five innings of work in which he blanked the Braves and allowed just one hit in a 7-2 Nationals victory.

DJ Herz has been a tough-luck pitcher since getting promoted to the big club in June. He’s pitched well for a rookie but has had little run support from his offense. Nevertheless, Herz has gotten sharper each month and enters Saturday’s affair with a 2.22 ERA in August.
Had it not been for his shaky start against the Giants on August 8th, in which he surrendered two runs before he was pulled after just 2.2 innings of work, Herz’s month would have been outstanding.
