Atlanta Braves vs. San Francisco Giants

Wednesday, August 14, 2024 – 09:45 PM ET at Oracle Park

Solid in Multiple Roles

Grant Holmes of the Braves had pitched well all year before a forgivable bad start in Colorado, and we are backing him to bounce back by visiting Robbie Ray and the Giants.

Holmes began this season with 10 relief appearances, and he was so successful that the Braves inserted him into the starting rotation on July 29th. He owns a 3.79 ERA and 3.32 xFIP for the season, and even those decent numbers are a bit skewed by his worst game of the season last time out when he allowed five runs in five innings in Colorado.

Any pitcher can be excused for a sub-par outing in Coors Field though, and Grant Holmes had allowed only four runs total over his first two starts with 12 strikeouts, He even had eight strikeouts in the rough start in Coors, so we like Holmes to have a nice bounce-back effort against a San Francisco offense ranked 21st in the league in wRC+ against right-handers at 94.

Lot of Walks and Home Runs

Ray has made only four starts for the Giants, but he is already showing the characteristics that have defined his entire career. He has always been a great strikeout guy, and that has continued this year with that rate at 12.39/9 through 20.1 innings. Sadly, that has usually been counteracted by high walk and home run rates, and unfortunately, those patterns have also continued.

Robbie Ray has a walk rate of 3.98/9 and a home run rate allowed of 2.21/9 in a Giant uniform. That is especially concerning against an Atlanta offense that is fourth in the majors in home runs with 155. And Ray’s home run rate is not entirely surprising considering his miniscule groundball rate of 29.5%.

The Pick

The Braves certainly have the power bats to take advantage of Ray, while Holmes is capable of shutting down a weak offense. Bet the Braves at a cheap price on the road in San Francisco.

Predicted Score: Braves 6 – Giants 3
