We are usually not fans of big favorites, but we are betting one on Tuesday while laying the odds with Jordan Wicks and the Cubs hosting Mitch Spence and the slumping Athletics.
One Bad Start
The southpaw Jordan Wicks comes in at 2-3 with a 5.27 ERA and 4.55 xFIP after getting roughed up for seven runs in three innings last time out. Keep in mind however that he has made only nine starts, so that one rough outing is enough to skew the frontline numbers. Furthermore, that punishment came at the hands of a Dodgers offense tied for second in the majors in wRC+ against left-handers at 118.
Jordan is facing a much less formidable offense tonight, and the fact of the matter is he had allowed three runs or less in seven of his first eight starts. And on the one occasion that he did not, he allowed exactly four runs. That makes his last outing easily his worst of the season, and we feel he is fully capable of bouncing back against an Oakland team that is 65-86 on the year after losing four of the last five games. That includes a 9-2 beatdown here last night.
Facing Hot Offense
Mitch Spence has been decent but unspectacular this season, going 7-9 with a 4.33 ERA and 4.06 xFIP. He has been noticeably worse away from the spacious Oakland Coliseum though, posting a 4.82 ERA and 4.62 xFIP on the road.
Mitch has a combination we do not like to see, with that being a moderate strikeout rate of 7.41/9 and an above average hard contact rate of 30.1%. His most frequent pitch is his cut fastball, but it averages only 90,8 MPH, making his lack of strikeouts understandable.
Furthermore, he is facing a Cubs offense that has suddenly caught fire against right-handed pitching in September, ranking second in the majors this month in wRC+ against them at a hefty 132.
The Pick
We expect the Cubs to stay hot against righties after another outburst last night, while at the same time expecting Wicks to bounce back from his poor start against the Dodgers. Back the Cubs as decided home favorites in Wrigley Field.
