Curtis Blaydes vs. Derrick Lewis

UFC Heavyweight Bout

Saturday, February 20th, 2021 - Live from the Apex Centre in Las Vegas

Curtis Blaydes

  • Age: 30
  • Nationality: USA
  • Record: 14-2-0
  • Height: 6ft 4"
  • Reach: 80"
  • Gym: Elevation Fight Team
  • Notable Gym Members: Justin Gaethje, Alistair Overeem, Neil Magny & Drew Dober
  • Current Streak: 1 win
  • Wins by KO/TKO: 10
  • Wins by Submission: 0
  • Decision wins: 4

Curtis Blaydes has wowed UFC fans since he began competing for the company, minus the apparent debut knockout loss to Francis Ngannou (who we will touch on later). A decorated wrestling background combined with the willingness to elevate his combat skillset led the Illinois born fighter into the world of mixed martial arts.

On the subject of 'elevate', Team Elevation out of Colorado has been the home of Blaydes training camps. Besides their kryptonite Francis Ngannou, Blaydes and his team have dominated the opposition from pillar to post.

Blaydes has now fought eleven times in the UFC heavyweight division, winning nine of those contests and losing two fights to the same opponent. He has finished ten of his professional fights via technical knockout/knockout, a lot of these knockouts are caused through Blaydes strategic wrestling converting into ground and pound once his fights hit the ground.

Derrick Lewis

  • Age: 36
  • Nationality: USA
  • Record: 16-9-0
  • Height: 6ft 3"
  • Reach: 79"
  • Gym: Silverback Fight Club
  • Notable Gym Members: N/A
  • Current Streak: 3 wins
  • Wins by KO/TKO: 19
  • Wins by Submission: 1
  • Decision wins: 4

Seven years spent fighting for the UFC and Derrick Lewis has cemented his name in the heavyweight Hall of Fame. Derrick Lewis will make his twenty-first walk into a UFC octagon this weekend whilst boasting the most excellent knockout record in UFC heavyweight history (11).

'The Black Beast' is not slowing down towards his late thirties, it could be argued that Lewis is reaching his prime. Collecting his first stripe on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt in 2020, a 3-fight win streak and a 4th placed ranking could put Lewis right into championship contention with an impressive win over Curtis Blaydes.

Fight Prediction

The 2nd and 4th ranked UFC heavyweights will throw down this weekend, and nothing can equal the high intensity of two 260-pound men swinging fists until either fighter is unconscious.

Although Lewis has taken his weight-cuts and broadened his skillset beyond his one-punch knockout special, competing against Curtis Blaydes' cardio might be a problem after the first two rounds. The knockout power is always present for Lewis, but with Blaydes' relentless takedown offence, I cannot envision him holding the gas tank to survive the full twenty-five minutes.

Aleksei Oleinik vs. Chris Daukaus

UFC Heavyweight Bout

Saturday, February 20th, 2021 - Live from the Apex Centre in Las Vegas

Aleksei Oleinik

  • Age: 43
  • Nationality: Russia
  • Record: 59-14-1 (8-5-0 UFC)
  • Height: 6ft 2"
  • Reach: 80"
  • Gym: American Top Team
  • Notable Gym Members: Junior Dos Santos, Andrei Arlovski & Jairzinho Rozenstruik
  • Current Streak: 1 loss
  • Wins by KO/TKO: 6
  • Wins by Submission: 48
  • Decision wins: 5

Forty-eight professional career wins by submission, does any more need to be said?

Oleinik has spent most of his life making other fighters submit, with a professional career of 74 fights, and he's only been defeated on 14 of those occasions.

Grappling and Jiu-Jitsu is Oleinik's world, and the only fighters who find success are those strong enough to keep the fight standing and who posses fight-ending power.

Chris Daukaus

  • Age: 31
  • Nationality: America
  • Record: 10-3-0 (2-0 UFC)
  • Height: 6ft 3"
  • Reach: 76"
  • Gym: Martinez BJJ MMA
  • Notable Gym Members: Kyle Daukaus
  • Current Streak: 3 wins
  • Wins by KO/TKO: 9
  • Wins by Submission: 0
  • Decision wins: 1

Chris Daukaus has impacted the heavyweight roster in just two UFC fights, finishing both opponents with a first-round knockout.

Daukaus has competed in fourteen professional MMA contests, the same number of times that Oleinik has lost. Experience is worlds apart, but the Philadelphia Police Officer has a style that could match Oleinik if the game plan is right.

Fight Prediction

Call me crazy, but I am siding with the inexperienced striker evading the veteran's submission attempts.

Oleinik has struggled with heavy-handed, precise strikers (check). Oleinik has also struggled when the opponent has a grappling background (check). Daukaus is a mean offensive striker with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt that is not discussed often, due to his knockout record (9).

For this fight, I anticipate Daukaus finding the shots that will collapse the pressure of Oleinik, ending in a technical knockout stoppage.
