Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier

UFC Lightweight Bout

Sunday, January 24th, 2021 - 03:05 AM GMT - Live from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi

Conor McGregor

  • Age: 32
  • Nationality: Ireland
  • Record: 22-4-0
  • Height: 5ft 8"
  • Reach: 74"
  • Gym: SBG Ireland
  • Notable Gym Members: Gunnar Nelson, James Gallagher & Makwan Amirkhani
  • Current Streak: 1 win
  • Wins by KO/TKO: 19
  • Wins by Submission: 1
  • Decision wins: 2

UFC 257 will host the most highly anticipated main event when the Notorious Conor McGregor returns to the octagon.

The extravagant yet highly skilled martial artist has already accomplished what most professional fighters dream of completing their career. But the hunger remains, and a rematch seven years in the making could propel either fighter right into title contention.

Conor excels through his diverse striking offence, with the vital weapon (left cross) always disguised in the background ready to pounce. His distance awareness and precise decision-making in a striking battle set him up as one greatest offensive strikers in modern-day MMA.

Dustin Poirier

  • Age: 32
  • Nationality: USA
  • Record: 26-6-0
  • Height: 5ft 9."
  • Reach: 72"
  • Gym: American Top Team
  • Notable Gym Members: Amanda Nunes, Amanda Ribas & Marlon Moraes.
  • Current Streak: 1 win
  • Wins by KO/TKO: 12
  • Wins by Submission: 7
  • Decision wins: 7

The Diamond isn't too far behind McGregor in terms of in-octagon accomplishments. Poirier is a former lightweight champion and owner of victories against Pettis, Gaethje, Alvarez, Holloway, and Dan Hooker.

Poirier falls heavily on his striking too, potentially an evil game plan for McGregor, but will the evolution of Poirier exceed that of the Irishman?

Fight Prediction

If you're anticipating a striking battle between the two, it's hard not to side with McGregor. Nate Diaz is the only fighter to date who gave McGregor a challenge on the fight, and we can't base that down to a size disadvantage.

A smart game plan for Poirier would be to disguise his wrestling and eventually shoot takedowns on McGregor, attempt to drain his cardio, and go back to a striking battle in the later rounds. This is easier said than done (see Chad Mendes vs. McGregor & McGregor vs Diaz II).

I predict the same outcome as their first encounter, an early knockout/technical knockout stoppage for Ireland Conor McGregor's pride. McGregor's knowledge of distance and dictating the stand-up pace is beyond elite, combined with his cat-like reflexes and perfect timing, I see no simple path for Poirier to win.

Marina Rodriguez vs. Amanda Ribas

UFC Strawweight Bout

Sunday, January 24th, 2021 - 03:05 AM GMT - Live from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi

Marina Rodriguez

  • Age: 33
  • Nationality: Brazil
  • Record: 12-1-2 (2-1-2 UFC)
  • Height: 5ft 9"
  • Reach: 40"
  • Gym: Equipe Thai Brasil
  • Notable Gym Members: N/A
  • Current Streak: 1 loss
  • Wins by KO/TKO: 5
  • Wins by Submission: 1
  • Decision wins: 6

Marina Rodriguez hones some high-level Muay Thai striking offence, also the owner of a purple BJJ belt to match. It's confusing why the bookmakers disrespect her with such a heavy betting line against her.

Amanda Ribas

  • Age: 27
  • Nationality: Brazil
  • Record: 10-1-0
  • Height: 5ft 4"
  • Reach: 66"
  • Gym: American Top Team
  • Notable Gym Members: Dustin Poirier, Amanda Nunes & Maron Moraes.
  • Current Streak: 5 wins
  • Wins by KO/TKO: 3
  • Wins by Submission: 4
  • Decision wins: 3

Amanda Ribas taking Mackenzie Dern to school for fifteen minutes was impressive. Since her knockout loss to Polyana Viana on the regional scene, she has taken considerable time and effort to evolve her game.

As she approaches her late twenties, Ribas improves from fight to fight. A mixture of knockout and submission finishes during her UFC tenure makes the Brazilian stand out from the rest.

Fight Prediction

Although I disagree with the UFC odds, taking Ribas to win by a decision will return close to even odds, and given the fact that Rodriguez has never been stopped in a fight, I'm confident with this selection.

UFC 257 Free Betting Pick: Amanda Ribas win by decision at 1.95 [-105] with Bet365 (visit our Bet365 Review)
