Bubba Watson of the United States

2021 Masters Tournament

April 8th to April 11th, 2021 at Augusta National

Bubba Watson to Excel in Tougher Conditions Like His Two Previous Green Jackets at Augusta

Bubba Watson won the Masters in 2012 and 2014 when the winning score was circa, eight, nine or ten under par. Last year's event that was hastily re-arranged for November in the fall brought a different challenge for the players with the course playing soft allowing Dustin Johnson to smash the scoring records and win with a twenty under par total. When the Floridian, Watson was in his pomp at the Augusta National the winning score was always ten shots more and the course played dryer and faster. The forty-two-year-old has yet to catch fire in 2021 but there was a glimmer of promise at the Dell Technologies Matchplay where he looked in better fettle.

If anywhere can inspire Watson, it is likely to be Augusta National and we know he is the sort of individual who excels at courses where he has a strong history of winning previously. We know all about Augusta National but let’s not forget his three Genesis Invitational wins at the Riviera Country Club or his three Travelers Championships at TPC River Highlands.

The biggest worry with Watson is often his dodgy putting but we’ve seen many a below-average putter excel at Augusta National over the years if their approach play is in good nick. There are some great each-way terms available this week and Paddy Power each way 10 places at 51.00 is a perfect play on Bubba Watson

Christiaan Bezuidenhout to Follow His Compatriots, Charl Schwartzel and Trevor Immelman as a Winner at Augusta National

Both Trevor Immelman and Charl Schwartzel were unheralded winners of the Masters in recent years when they did something their better-vaunted compatriots, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen couldn’t, by wearing the Green Jacket. The young South African, Christiaan Bezuidenhout is my idea of a similar sort suited by the unique test and fast greens Augusta offer. Last year was his debut and he performed creditably, and history says that a second Masters can be the best opportunity of a Green Jacket as Charl Schwartzel, Jordan Spieth and Danny Willett have proved in recent seasons. I like a correlation with results from the PGA Championship on the European Tour at Wentworth, where Bezuidenhout was 3rd in 2019 to Danny Willett. Despite being only twenty-six, Christiaan Bezuidenhout has overcome his fair share of challenges that began as young as two when he unwittingly digested rat poison. This near death experience left it’s mark with an affected nervous system and stammer which brought about later difficulties in school years. Six years under the tutorship of the Ernie Els Foundation and forming a close relationship with the great man steadied the ship.

Already a winner at Valdermama on the European Tour and recent winning form in South Africa it would not surprise me if Bezuidenhout does something his mentor, Ernie Els couldn't and wins a first Masters title this week.
