Man City remain the favourites to win the Champions League after they were drawn against Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals.
Pep Guardiola’s team beat Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0 on aggregate in the Round of 16, and they must now contend with another German side. Dortmund boast the top scorer in this season’s competition – Erling Haaland has banged in 10 goals in just six games – but Man City’s defence has been superb this season.
They were the favourites to win the competition before the draw was made in Nyon this morning, and they have retained that status. Paddy Power, Betfair and MansionBet are all offering 9/4 (3.25) on Man City winning the Champions League, and all bookmakers will offer a third of the odds on a runner-up finish if you go each-way.
Reigning European champions Bayern Munich have drifted out to 4/1 (5.00) with various bookmakers after they landed a tricky tie against PSG, the team they beat in last year’s final. PSG swept Barcelona aside in the last 16, and that promises to be a thrilling clash between European heavyweights.
The French champions will hope to have Neymar fit and ready to play alongside Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria in a star-studded attack. Yet they must somehow find a way to stop a Bayern side that have not lost in Europe for more than two years year. PSG are now all the way out at 9/1 (10.00) with Unibet to win the Champions League.
Liverpool, who beat Bayern Munich en route to winning the Champions League in 2019, are now priced at 13/2 (7.50) with Bet365 to win this season’s competition. They were drawn against Real Madrid for the quarter-finals.
Los Blancos beat Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final, but Cristiano Ronaldo left the club that summer, and they have flopped in the competition each year since then. They got the better of Atalanta in the last round, but they will need to up their game against Liverpool.
The Reds have no senior centre-backs available, with Virgil Van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all on the treatment table, but they remain strong in midfield and in attack. Real Madrid are now out at 12/1 (13.00) with Betfred to win the Champions League, so the bookies seemingly expect Liverpool to progress to the semi-finals at their expense.
The final quarter-final tie sees Chelsea lock horns with Porto. The Blues are unbeaten in 13 games since appointing former PSG boss Thomas Tuchel as manager in January, and they beat La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid to nil in both legs of their last 16 clash.
Chelsea are now priced at just 5/1 (6.00) with Bet365 and various others to win the competition, leaving them third in the betting. Porto are out at 40/1 (41.00) with William Hill. They knocked Juventus out of the tournament in the last round, so they cannot be taken lightly, but Chelsea are in fine form right now.
Bayern Munich have been the most popular selection among punters thus far, followed by Chelsea.
The two-legged quarter-finals will take place on April 6-7 and 13-14. The winner of the clash between Real Madrid and Liverpool will face either Porto or Chelsea in the semi-finals. The other semi-final will see either Man City or Dortmund take on Bayern or PSG. The first legs of the semi-final will be on April 27-28 with the return fixtures on May 4-5.
