Michigan Wolverines vs. Washington Huskies

Saturday, October 05, 2024 – 07:30 PM ET at Husky Stadium

Michigan Survives at Home

Kalel Mullings powered through the rain for 111 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, helping Michigan hold off Minnesota 27-24 on Saturday.

The Wolverines built a commanding 24-3 lead by the fourth quarter, but the Gophers rallied with three touchdowns to narrow the gap to just three points with 1:37 remaining.

Minnesota recovered the initial onside kick attempt but was called for offsides, giving Mullings a chance to secure the second kick and seal the victory for Michigan, which extended its Big Ten winning streak to 27 games—unbeaten in conference play since falling to Michigan State in 2021.

Mullings’ efforts compensated for a lackluster passing game. Alex Orji managed just 86 yards after completing 10 of 18 passing, tossing one touchdown and a costly interception that helped fuel Minnesota’s comeback push.

Michigan burned 6:32 off the clock before settling for Zvada’s field goal to stretch their lead to 27-17 with 4:33 to play. However, Minnesota’s Brosmer found Daniel Jackson for a 12-yard touchdown, cutting it to a three-point game.

Washington Falls Against Rutgers

In another close matchup, Rutgers held off Washington 21-18 on Friday night after Huskies kicker Grady Gross missed a 55-yard attempt as time expired.

Will Rogers III connected with Denzel Boston for a 12-yard touchdown and hit Keleki Latu for a two-point conversion to make it 21-18 with 1:40 left. Washington got the ball back with 35 seconds remaining, but Gross’s potential game-tying field goal sailed wide left.

Despite outgaining Rutgers 521-299 in total yardage, Washington was plagued by missed opportunities—failing on three field goals, committing six penalties for 69 yards, and converting just 2 of 12 third-down attempts.

Rogers threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns on 26-of-36 passing, adding to his already impressive career numbers as the active FBS leader in completions and completion percentage, while ranking second in passing yards and touchdowns.

“It was a game that went 60 minutes,” first-year Washington coach Jedd Fisch. “But I told the team, you can’t play two teams. You can’t play ourselves and our opponent. When you have a penalty after a blocked field goal and when you miss three field goals, there’s too many things that came back to get us.

“Not to take anything away from Rutgers, but we didn’t handle our penalties and that’s the saddest part of the night.”

The Pick

Washington’s offense racked up 521 yards against Rutgers, demonstrating their ability to move the ball effectively. With Rogers leading the way, the Huskies have one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the country, making them dangerous, even if they fall behind early.

Despite penalties and special teams struggles (three missed field goals), Washington still managed to keep the game close, losing by just three points. If they can clean up some of those errors, they have the potential to win this game, especially because they will be at home.

Washington’s offense has shown the ability to strike quickly and create explosive plays. A few big plays can keep them within striking distance, making an upset a real possibility.

Washington gave up 21 points against Rutgers, and their defense ranks 13th in the nation, allowing 12.4 points per game, which indicates potential for them to step up and get key stops, which could frustrate Michigan and limit scoring.
