Just when it looked like former President Donald Trump would have a day off for the first time in weeks, incumbent President Joe Biden threw down the gauntlet on Wednesday morning and challenged Trump to a couple of debates before the upcoming presidential election.

Despite the hush money trial being off this past Wednesday (due to a weekly break), the former Commander-in-Chief did not rest as he took to social media to accept the invitation. Consequently, Biden and Trump are scheduled to meet first on June 27 in a debate hosted by CNN. The second event is set for September 10 on ABC.

As part of the vast political betting markets available, top-rated sportsbooks have already posted some prop bets for the CNN debate. BetOnline (visit our BetOnline) is offering two betting markets at the moment, but more are expected, as we draw closer to the events.

A market that could prove very valuable, given the wording of the prop itself, is whether the CNN debate will be canceled or postponed. This is intriguing because the date of this debate is already somewhat uncertain. Neither Biden nor Trump will be the official candidate for their respective party by then.

Even more surprising, Trump hasn’t even announced his running mate yet. Currently, the Republican National Convention is scheduled for July 15th, and the Democratic Convention isn’t taking place until August 19th.

When you pair that with the turmoil from Trump’s legal battles and the requests from Biden’s camp, the “Yes” at +300 could be worth considering.

Details

After the debates were confirmed, the AP Press revealed some details, including a request from Biden’s camp to exclude any third-party candidates, specifically Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his Independent ticket. They also outlined that the debates should take place without any audience.

On the other hand, it was reported that Trump’s camp is pushing for more than two debates, proposing one debate per month from June through September. However, the incumbent president’s corner has not responded to the matter.

Another important circumstance AP and Reuters pointed out is Biden’s legal issues. However, in this case, it’s not President Joe Biden but rather his son Hunter Biden who’s set to stand trial in California and New York. The trial dates have yet to be announced but are expected to start during the second semester of 2024.

And the Winner Is…

  • Donald Trump (-140)
  • Joe Biden (+100)

At least according to the polls. Since determining a winner is highly subjective, this wager will be graded based on any poll co-sanctioned by CNN. In the absence of such a poll, the answer will be determined by YouGov, Ipsos, or an aggregate of both. A lack of any of those three sources will result in voided bets.

In such a bipartisan market, especially one as polarizing as this, the best approach is to rely on the most objective tools. If we examine the recent line history for Biden and Trump’s odds, it’s hard to deny the former president’s lead over the last couple of months, even with his legal battles unfolding.

Closing In

While it’s true that Incumbent President Joe Biden has closed the gap over the last week, he has dropped down about 20 cents, making Trump the odds-on favorite again according to linemakers. Recent polls have shown similar trends.

However, considering the event will be hosted by CNN and you can get Biden at even money, it might be worth the risk given the network’s traditional demographics.

Stay tuned as we’ll update this article when more props become available for either the first debate or the one on ABC in September.
