Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Detroit Lions
Sunday, September 15, 2024 – 01:00 PM ET at Ford Field
Tampa Bay Is Flying Under the Radar
The Buccaneers dominated the Commanders on Sunday in Tampa and won 37-20. Baker Mayfield was electric, throwing for 289 yards and four touchdowns. Tampa Bay’s defense also stepped up, holding rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels to just 184 passing yards in his first career start.
Mike Evans led the receiving corps with two touchdown grabs, while Chris Godwin and rookie Jalen McMillan each found the end zone once. Despite missing two starters and losing three cornerbacks during the game, the Buccaneers’ defense contained Daniels and the Commanders’ offense effectively.
In Week 1, the Detroit Lions’ passing game was somewhat shaky, but they still managed a 26-20 overtime win against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football. Jared Goff completed 18 of 28 passes for 217 yards with one touchdown and one interception, David Montgomery ran for 91 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries, and Jameson Williams caught five passes for 121 yards and one touchdown.
Now, Goff and his offense face a banged-up Buccaneers secondary, which had issues even before the injuries.
The Pick
Last season, the Lions swept the Buccaneers, winning 20-6 on the road in Week 6 and 31-23 at home in the playoffs. Detroit racked up over 380 yards of offense in both games, consistently exploiting Tampa’s pass defense, particularly with Amon-Ra St. Brown, who hauled in 20 receptions for 201 yards and two touchdowns across the two matchups.
The Lions’ offense looks poised to move the ball efficiently again, even against Tampa Bay’s stout run defense. While Mayfield and his talented receivers—led by Evans and Godwin—pose a challenge, the Detroit defense matches up well against the Buccaneers’ struggling run game. Detroit’s talent edge should tip the scales, but Tampa Bay can keep this game close.
